Flanked
assumes that every writer has her match in genius, in creativity,
in criticism and to foster her craft, she must seek out this equivalent.
More importantly, she need not look much farther than the writer or writers
beside her.
Often, a woman is blessed with several complements women with whom she can
fellowship and learn. Often, she is flanked by them.
Flanked connects serious women writers to
women as fierce as themselves writers often unrecognized,
sometimes unpublished,
but certainly on the verge of making them a world. |
Housed
in Baltimore, Maryland,
were unafraid of picking up, leaving home, and chasing after literature, but
still, we suspect that our backyard gardens are
wild and warm enough.
Our
relationships are built and maintained through classes with local
and regional writers, through workshops headed by closet masters of the craft,
through readings,
through conferences, through mere telephone conversations and chance meetings
in the park.
Our mission is to stir up the womenfolk and help them realize
what good they can do each other. |
Aside from
access to the geniuses that will be,
we, on occasion, call on the services of women who are no longer reveling
in their potential, rather they are moving, shaking, and getting on with
the business of writing.
They remind us of talent’s vanity—that it refuses to go undiscovered
for long.
The home grown connections facilitated by Flanked occur
across the seasons. This year’s first gathering will take
shape as a conference—
intimate in number, yawning in value.
We welcome you with arms
wide as the sun. Come fellowship, come learn, come bask in the
good feeling that is women writing seriously.
